EU’s chief negotiator, Michel Barnier.The EU’s chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, has pencilled in 19 June for the first formal day of talks with Britain about its withdrawal from the European Union, in what are being billed as the most important negotiations in the country’s history.

Julian Assange in February last year.Swedish prosecutors have dropped their preliminary investigation into an allegation of rape against the WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, bringing an end to a seven-year legal standoff.

The decision was taken after prosecutors concluded that “at this point, all possibilities to conduct the investigation are exhausted”, Sweden’s director of public prosecutions, Marianne Ny, said on Friday. Read more HERE.

A car rests on a security barrier in New York’s Times Square after driving through a crowd of pedestrians Thursday. A man drove his car at high speed onto a pavement in New York’s Times Square on Thursday, killing one 18-year-old woman and injuring 22 other people.

Bill de Blasio, the mayor of New York City, said there was “no indication that this was an act of terrorism”, after observers initially feared a repeat of recent incidents in Europe.

The mayor said that authorities were none the less “reinforcing key locations around the city” out of what he called “an abundance of caution”. Read more HERE.
