Lego has announced plans to cut 1,400 jobs before the end of the year after the first drop in sales in more than a decade.
The Danish toymaker said the cuts amounted to 8% of its global workforce. Revenue fell 6% in the first half of 2017 to 14.9bn Danish krone (£1.8bn). “We are very sorry to make changes which may interfere with the lives of many of our colleagues,” said Jørgen Vig Knudstorp, chairman of the group. The Russian president Vladimir Putin has warned that the escalating North Korean crisis could cause a “planetary catastrophe” and huge loss of life.
“Ramping up military hysteria in such conditions is senseless; it’s a dead end,” he told reporters in China. “It could lead to a global, planetary catastrophe and a huge loss of human life. There is no other way to solve the North Korean nuclear issue, save that of peaceful dialogue.” Read more HERE
Angela Merkel clashed with her Social Democrat rival, Martin Schulz, in a lively television debate on Sunday evening widely seen as the last opportunity for the chancellor’s opponent to claw back support before a crucial election in three weeks’ time.
With latest polls showing Merkel’s CDU and her partners in Bavaria’s CSU ahead of Schulz’s SPD by 15 to 17 points, but with half of voters said to be undecided, the primetime face-off was seen as Schulz’s best chance to influence the outcome. Read more HERE
